Protection you can still work in

RagTop did not build the Fire Duty Mitt to be the bulkiest glove on the rig. It is built low-profile and ergonomic, with sculpted fingers that taper from knuckle to fingertip the way a hand actually does.

The result is a structural glove your crew keeps on — because it does not fight them on a coupling, a hand tool, a carabiner or a radio. Padded knuckles add thermal protection across the back of the hand, and the leather breaks in to a closer, hand-conforming fit with use.

The glove that goes back on wet

Every firefighter knows the moment: the glove comes off on the fireground, the liner is saturated, and it will not go back on. Worse, the liner pulls inside out and the glove is finished for the rest of the call.

The Fire Duty Mitt is built specifically against that failure. The Kevlar® liner is double-sewn to stay put rather than pull out with your hand, and the glove is designed to be donned and doffed when wet. It is the detail RagTop leads with, and the one firefighters repeat back in their reviews.

NFPA 1970-2025 Edition compliant

RagTop states that the Fire Duty Mitt is compliant to the NFPA 1970-2025 Edition — the consolidated standard that now carries structural firefighting glove requirements previously found in NFPA 1971.

If your specification, grant language or purchasing documents still reference NFPA 1971, talk to us before you write the spec. We will help you get the citation right so the order is not held up in review.

Fit and sizing · 07

Size down one. Seriously.

The Fire Duty Mitt fits true to size for an average hand, but RagTop recommends dropping down one size for the optimal fit, because the leather expands slightly as the glove breaks in.

Target fit: snug through the palm, comfortable through the fingers. If it feels perfect out of the box in the palm, it will feel loose in a month.

Care and service life · 08

Hand wash only

Leather gloves are not turnout gear, and this is where departments quietly destroy them. Follow RagTop's instructions and the glove lasts. Run it through the gear washer and it will not.

Do not machine wash or extract

RagTop expressly instructs that Fire Duty Mitts must not be cleaned in a gear washer or gear extractor, and must not be exposed to chlorine bleach or other solvents. If your PPE cleaning program batches gloves with turnout gear, pull these out of that process.

  1. Hand washMild detergent and room-temperature water only.
  2. Squeeze, never wringPress out excess water. Wringing distorts the glove and the liner.
  3. Shape and air dryShape the glove back to the hand and let it air dry completely before storage.
  4. Store cool and dryStore fully dry, in a cool, dry place. Condition occasionally with a balm- or oil-based leather care product.

Delta provides PPE cleaning, inspection and repair services. Ask us before you send gloves in — glove care is handled separately from turnout gear and we will confirm the correct process against the manufacturer's current instructions.

Are RagTop Fire Duty Mitts NFPA compliant?

Yes. RagTop states the Fire Duty Mitts are compliant to the NFPA 1970-2025 Edition, the consolidated standard that now carries the structural firefighting glove requirements previously found in NFPA 1971. If your spec, grant paperwork or purchase order still cites NFPA 1971, talk to us before you submit it so the citation does not hold up your order. Manufacturer certification documentation is available on request.

What size should I order?

Order one size down from your usual glove size. Fire Duty Mitts fit true to size out of the box, but the kangaroo leather expands slightly as it breaks in — so a glove that fits perfectly on day one will feel loose in a month. Target a snug palm and comfortable fingers. The NFPA-to-RagTop size chart above cross-references 64N through 82XW. Sizing a whole crew? Call us first.

Can I clean these in our gear extractor?

No — and this is the fastest way to ruin them. RagTop expressly instructs that Fire Duty Mitts must not be cleaned in a gear washer or gear extractor, and must not be exposed to chlorine bleach or solvents. Hand wash with mild detergent and room-temperature water, squeeze rather than wring, shape to the hand and air dry. If your PPE program batches gloves in with turnout gear, pull these out of that process. Full instructions are in the care section.

Will they really go back on when they are wet?

That is the problem this glove is built around. The Kevlar® liner is double-sewn so it stays put instead of pulling inside out with your hand — which is the failure that ends most gloves mid-call. RagTop leads with wet donning and doffing, and it is the single most repeated theme in the reviews they publish. It is a design intent and firefighters' reported experience, not a laboratory-measured claim.

How long is the break-in?

The leather conforms with use rather than needing a forced break-in. Expect the glove to loosen slightly and shape to your hand over the first few weeks of wear — which is exactly why the manufacturer recommends sizing down one. Occasional conditioning with a balm- or oil-based leather care product keeps the leather in condition over the service life.
